A Perry Mason Mystery: The Case of the Curious Bride/Audio Cassettes
Published in Audio Cassette by Dh Audio (September, 1992)
Authors: Erle Stanley Gardner, William Reader : Hootkins, and William Hootkins
Average review score:

The book was better
A masterful reading of a wonderful novel. Unfortunately, this abridgement cuts out so much that the storyline becomes almost nonsensical. In the original book Mason gets two eyewitnesses to change their story by convincing them that they were mistaken in what they thought they heard. In this condensed version, the eyewitnesses change their story after simply being asked, "Are you sure you are not mistaken?" The book was better.

ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2 Official Strategy Guide
Published in Paperback by Brady Games (22 November, 2000)
Authors: Brady Games, Douglas Perry, and BradyGames
Average review score:

Don't get smacked around a second time!!!
Ready 2 Rumble: Round 2 is the sequel (and a good one at that) to well, Ready 2 Rumble. Makes sense, right? I decided to buy this strategy guide because I already had the game. Most people naturally think sports strategy guides are futile, but it gives an extremely detailed explanation of every boxer, including special moves, taunts, and combos, and also the 4 modes of play- this is what everybody has trouble trying to find out. If you're not into boxing or boxing video games steer clear, because this is strictly a strategy guide. This guide extended the lifespan of Ready 2 Rumble: Round 2 for Nintendo 64 and it made it more enjoyable, and that is enough of a reason for a strategy guide to earn its respect, don't you agree??

Religion in Politics: Constitutional & Moral Perspectives
Published in Paperback by Oxford Univ Pr on Demand (February, 1999)
Author: Michael J. Perry
Average review score:

A Book That Could've Benefitted From a Bit More Thought.
This is a deeply felt issue by all viewpoints involved. As such, it has proved difficult for authors to write about in a coolheaded, professional way. Michael Perry (Wake Forest University) has done a good job. With clear, concise writing and a style unafraid of difficult subjects (abortion, homosexualism) he challenges everyone from secularist Richard Rorty to Pope John Paul II.
The book is divided into three sections. The first discusses the constitutional issues. What position is the government obliged to take on religious issues? To this, Perry answers: a neutral one. Government should neither support nor discriminate against religious ideas. The second section moves away from the first amendment to discuss whether it is moral for constuents to use religious arguments in public debate. Perry answers yes. All sides of an argument need to be represented and as long as the view expressed is relevant (i.e., it speaks sincerely to the issue) it should be put into the marketplace of ideas and discussed. Good so far. The last section talks about wheter it is then moral for a legislator to use and vote a certain way because of a religious argument. It is here that Perry's argument becomes inconsistent.
Here he answers that it is only moral for a legislator to use religious argument to decide issues if she can also reach the same conclusion by secular reasoning. One problem with this. This view (apart from being incongruous with Perry's above opinions) undermines the concept of a democratic republic. If Perry supports the constituents use of religious arguments and the representatives job is to represent her constituents, than if the majority of her constituents use a religious argument wouldn't it be moral for her to reflect her constituents wishes legislatively? Perry is inconsistent. What would the point be of saying yes to religious argument amongst constituents if the representative of the constituents can not use that religious argument unless supported by a corresponding secular one? This huge inconsistency made it hard for me to take the book as seriously as I might have.
The only other thing that bothered me was the use of endnotes instead of footnotes. The text is 106 pages followed by 51 pages of very thorough endnotes. Seeing as the endnotes added a lot to this book, it would've saved a lot of page-flipping had the notes been printed at the bottom of their respective pages. Nit-picky? A bit. Trust me, it will become a distraction.

The Renaissance: Masterpieces of Art and Architecture (Art Movements)
Published in Hardcover by Smithmark Publishing (September, 1997)
Authors: Susan Wright and Judith Perry
Average review score:

A useful reference in studying the Renaissance
I use this text as a classroom reference as I teach Greek mythology (which heavily influenced the art of the Renaissance) and Shakespeare (who came at the tail end of the Renaissance).

I find that the large, full-color illustrations of artwork and architechture helps students picture some of the stories and time periods we study. We discuss how some of the movements of the time period (which are clearly explained in the text of this book) can be seen in Shakespeare as well as in the art, architecture and even the fashion of the time period. (Although fashion is regrettably not covered in the text, the ornate influences in the artworld did carry over to the dress of the tme period).

I do have to admit that the text may be difficult if you are not already familiar with some of the places and events of the Renaissance, but in that way the text may also serve as an introduction. Whatever interests you, research further.

In the meantime, marvel at the art wrought by those Renaissance masters!

Scattered Pieces: Stories
Published in Paperback by Marper Publishing, LLC (15 January, 2003)
Authors: Diane M. Marbury and Vivian J. Perry
Average review score:

A Little Piece of Everything
Scattered Pieces, by Diane M. Marbury and Vivian J. Perry, was an exciting change of pace. Scattered Pieces features twelve short stories, each highlighted with a beautiful piece of poetry at the end. While Marbury crafted stories which danced with a "new school" twist, Perry spun stories from an "old school" web of wisdom. Each story meshed together to create a book on love and life.

Although I found Scattered Pieces to be an enjoyable read, many of the story plots left a little to be desired. Just as I was getting to know certain characters, the story would come to a screeching halt, leaving me with a desire to see more of a resolution. Overall, the stories were well-crafted, but some of them left me with the feeling that the author rushed towards the ending. For the most part, I found each story to be entertaining and the characters to be memorable. If you are a fan of short stories, I recommend you pickup a copy of Scattered Pieces.

Sources of the Western Tradition: From Ancient Times to the Enlightenment
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin College (June, 1995)
Author: Marvin Perry
Average review score:

Good Content but Wordy Explanations
I am a sophmore in high school, and we are currently using this book for our European Civilazation Class. The book itself is very informative, and it gives excellent insight to the world of Ancient Greece and Rome in particular, with analysis of philosiphers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. However, the way the book is written is difficult to follow, and it does not always lay things out in an easy-to-understand format. Nevertheless, a good textbook for High School and College Humanities classes.

Special Edition Using PeopleSoft (SE Using)
Published in Hardcover by MacMillan Publishing Company (06 December, 1999)
Authors: Paul Greenberg, Michael Fauscette, Mike Fauscette, and Perry Keating
Average review score:

Detailed Brochure
This book does not give much information on implementing PeopleSoft technically. Rather, it's a book that advertises the capabilities of PeopleSoft and its different Modules. This book teaches consultants how to do project management rather than how to use peopletools. I would not recommend this book for technical people. It's a book for consultants, who wants to know things to consider in implementing peoplesoft, what resources are needed and how to go about with a project. But it won't teach you how to really use peoplesoft.
